Hi Everybody

I am excited to have a new website to share music with all of you. I am thrilled to be releasing a new album in the new year called Down Home. This is music inspired by American roots music, from country to blues. Most specifically the music of this group was inspired by a trip to the Otha Turner Family Goat Roast in the summer of 2009. It was one of the first times I could hear the heartbeat of this great country and it changed me for life.

Another great new adventure is the music I have been making with the great Czech pianist Emil Viklicky and we will have a new quartet record coming ou in the new year as well with Richie Barshay on drums and Aiden Carrol on bass.

To the right is a calendar of selected events and if you would like to know about upcoming releases and projects please sign up for the mailling list.

Songs of Tales

National Arts Center Fourth Stage, 53 Elgin Street, Ottawa

SONGS of TALES April 29th at NAC's Fourth Stage Featuring: Petr Cancura - woodwinds Jesse Zubot - violin & electronics Jean Martin - drums & electronics Gord Grdina - guitar

A reminder about a very special show coming up this Sunday!

Songs of tales is about telling musical stories. The four musicians here have been carefully chosen for the way they open up their souls and tell riveting musical stories. Rooted in songs, inspired by an orchestral sensibility and improvisation, creates an unforgettable musical experience.

Drummer Jean Martin and violinist Jesse Zubot are the magic band behind the unique sound of Tanya Tagaq. They are both irreplaceably powerful artists in their own right and also revered producers: both Jesse and Jean run their own record labels, Barnyard Records and Drip Audio respectively. Saxophonist Petr Cancura has spent the last decade in New York honing his craft with artists such as Julian Lage, Danilo Perez, Joe Morris. Cancura is clarified an ever exploring style by combining roots music with jazz sensibilities to his very own personal sound. The group is rounded out by a powerful multi-instrumentalist from Vancouver, Gord Grdina. Gord has collaborated with Jazz greats Gary Peacock and Paul Motion, avant garde masters such as Evan Parker and Colin Stetson but is also a large part of the sound of the ever-popular Dan Mangan. All these artists have an uncanny ability to see and hear the big picture in a project.

Come join us, we promise to give you our very best!

Kellylee Evans with Petr Cancura - SWING SWING SWING

National Arts Centre's Studio, 53 Elgin Street, Ottawa, ON

Inspired by the great jazz diva Ella Fitzgerald and the Swing Dance movement alike, Swing Swing Swing! brings together the unmistakable voice of Kellylee Evans and the arrangements of Petr Cancura and his band to bring you a good old fashioned swing dance. Whether you want to dance or just listen, this show is all about Swing Swing Swing!

The Canadian singer/songwriter Kellylee Evans is a chameleon-like performer, whose natural charm and improvisational jazz vocal style have shone on her adventurous journey through jazz, soul, pop and hip-hop over the past decade. In that period, she released two indie solo albums of original songs in Canada, winning a JUNO Award for "Best Jazz Vocal Album" for Nina, her impassioned tribute to Nina Simone.

Saxophonist, mandolinist, composer, photographer and producer Petr Cancura is a Czech born Canadian who spent the last 10 years in New York after attending New England Conservatory in Boston. Petr re-established his base as Ottawa two years ago as the Artist-In-Residence of Carleton University, the Program Director of the Ottawa Jazz Festival and the Musical Director of the National Arts Centre’s Crossroads Series, where he re-imagines the songs of current Canadian Songwriters for an all-star jazz cast.
